My path through school was anything but straightforward. I dreamed big but struggled to channel it into results, and by the end of Year 12 my options were limited. My only real academic recognition at the time was a certificate of participation in the high school Westpac Maths competition; which probably tells you everything you need to know. For a while, law felt like someone else’s story.

But there was one thing I never quite lost, the ability to dream. So I applied to Griffith University through the mature age entry pathway, and spent what felt like an eternity pestering the law faculty until they finally let me enrol in a Bachelor of Laws alongside a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology). I grabbed that chance with both hands.

From my very first day, something shifted. On the car trip home from uni, I’d sit there visualising standing on stage receiving the dux award. People probably would have found it a little delusional, and honestly, fair enough. But a few years later, that’s exactly what happened. I finished top of my class and graduated as Griffith Law School dux.

The story caught people’s attention in a way I never expected. It made the papers three times, including the Courier-Mail, with headlines like “From dud to dux” and “Wise move turns fantasy to reality.” I even found myself in the ABC Brisbane studios talking about it with Steve Austin. I still smile about all of it. Not because of the recognition, but because it reminded me that people genuinely connect with a story of someone who took the long road.

From there, I joined Blake Dawson Waldron (now Ashurst), one of Australia’s leading international law firms, where I learned what genuine legal excellence looks like, the rigour, the responsiveness, the absolute focus on the client. Those standards still shape everything I do today.

In time, I knew I wanted to build something of my own. A firm that brought that same level of expertise but felt more personal, where clients weren’t just matters on a list, but people whose outcomes genuinely mattered. That’s how Gibson MacNeill Lawyers came to be.

​

Today, as founder and managing partner, I still carry with me the memory of being that young bloke who took the long road to get here. That perspective never leaves you. It shapes how I show up for clients, how I lead our team, and how I approach every matter that comes through our door.

​

Because behind every business dispute, investment decision, development project or legal challenge, there’s a person who genuinely cares about what happens next. My job, and my privilege, is to guide them through it with clarity, real commitment, and care that goes well beyond the file.
